I don't even know where to begin with this one. JD Drew. By all accounts, the malcontent who didn't give a shit about winning at any point in his career has now become a member of the Boston Red Sox.
To say this signing blows people's minds would be an understatement. 5 years, 70 million dollars. Right now, today, I love this signing. Why you ask? Well, because it gives you a great 3, 4, 5 of Ortiz, Manny, Drew. As long as Drew is in the lineup. Oh and as long as Manny is in there too. Reports still say that the Sox are trying to trade Manny, and lets just say after this move I hope they don't get shit done.
You simply can't rely on Ortiz/Drew back to back in the Red Sox lineup producing next year. Its impossible. In any late game stretch you'll have the opposing team's lefty specialist in the game, and you'll lose any protection for Ortiz for the inevitable 15 day DL stint that JD Drew can't seem to avoid.
What's confusing with this signing is that the Red Sox typically do the exact opposite. JD Drew is alarmingly close to Trot Nixon's production, and the Sox don't typically pay 8 million dollars extra for the same production. I seriously don't know what to make of this deal. I don't have any idea if this is a part of the Sox just blowing past the $130-$140 million payroll or if this is really a Manny Ramirez exit strategy.
Lets hope for the former, not the later.

Manny is gone. This team can't afford to have him and Drew. Our payroll is already too high for what this ownership can afford
This contract is going to suck in 2 years when we realize that the Sox are paying "Trot Nixon" 14m a year. I hope I'm wrong.
More mind boggling is that the Sox are paying 9m a year for Julio Lugo. The greatest defensive shortstop I've ever watched signed for 3/15 with the Reds. The World Series winning shortstop is in Anaheim. Oh...and do yourself the pleasure of going to baseballreference.com and look him up. Scroll to the bottom and see who he compares to most in history. The Sox just basically paid 9m a year for Tony Bernazard.
