Stalemate on Matsuzaka - Red Sox Negotiations

Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe and boston.com is reporting that Scott Boras said tonight that if talks remain the same between the Boston Red Sox and Daisuke Matsuzaka, Matsuzaka will return to Japan unsigned.

Now is the time for Theo Epstein and John Henry to step up to the plate and to get the deal done. The Red Sox will be the laughing stock of Major League Baseball if they do not get this deal completed. It'll piss me off to no end too. They don't do a single thing operationally without knowing what the net result will be. They know the $51 million they posted for the rights to talk to him will be made back 10 fold, and they know when it will be made back by as well.

Its an absolute joke that this deal hasn't been consummated at this point. Theo is once again asleep at the wheel. Its his job to know what the market will be and to anticipate it and make sure the Red Sox are in the best position possible with the market at hand. That hasn't happened this year.

They need to make an offer that gets the job done. And they only have 48 hours to do it.

I still don't understand how Boras has any leverage. If the deal doesn't get done, he goes back to Japan, he "looses honor", he gets paid $3 million, and his team is pissed at him cuz they didn't get their $51 million. Then next year, the Sox or another team can overbid again and decide not to sign him again for Boras's terms. Wouldn't a lack of signing hurt Boras's chances of landing future Japaneese players as his clients?

Because if this was the Yankees, he'd have his money by now. If they go through the posting process again, he'll get his money.

Boras is a great spin-doctor...he won't let himself leave this situation with any egg on his face.
